Incorporating Ag Plastics Recycling in Municipal Recycling Programs: A Case Study

Including agricultural plastics recycling in municipal recycling programs can be a cost effective and efficient way to encourage proper disposal and increase opportunities for recycling. This presentation will walk through small to large scale collection efforts conducted by state and local governments and discuss successes and opportunities for future events and collaborations.
Melissa Kono is an Associate Professor in the Community Resource Development with the University of Wisconsin-Extension and is the Extension County Educator in Clark and Trempealeau Counties in Wisconsin. She was a consultant for USAID’s Farmer to Farmer program where she traveled to the Dominican Republic to work with banana farmers, producers, and recyclers on ag plastics recycling in the banana industry. She coordinates Ag Plastics Recycling events across Wisconsin working with local government, non-profit, and industry partners. She has conducted several studies and surveys on Ag Plastics Recycling including costs, behaviors, and coordination. Ms. Kono has presented this research at various national and international conferences including the International Silage Conference in Beijing, China.
