Recycled PE Mulches for Asphalt Pavement Applications
Dr. Kun Zhang, P.E., Associate Professor, California State University, Chico
This presentation will provide an overview of the use of waste plastic in asphalt roads while emphasizing the outcomes from the USDA SCRI Project to recycle used PE mulch as an asphalt binder modifier for pavement applications. The influences of used PE mulch with different levels of contamination on the engineering performance of mulch-modified asphalt binders and mixtures are studied. The production guidance of using recycled PE mulch in asphalt roads, such as production temperature, mixing dosage of PE mulch, and different recycling methods (wet vs. dry mixing), will also be discussed.
Dr. Kun Zhang is an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering at California State University, Chico. He is a Lantis-Endowed University Professor and Dennis P. Murphy Distinguished Teacher-Scholar-Mentor Fellow in Civil Engineering. His research focuses on the recycling of industrial and agricultural by-products in asphalt materials, including recycled PE mulch as binder modifier, olive/grape pomaces as antioxidant additives, waste cooking oil for bio-binder development, and waste carbon fiber composite materials to reinforce porous asphalt. He also works on advanced numerical modeling for pavement temperature and aging analyses. He served as PI/Co-PI for research projects funded by various agencies, such as FHWA, USDA, state DOTs, CSU Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) program, and industrial companies. He has published over 30 journal and conference papers on pavement design, construction, and maintenance.
